'53 Buick

'53 Buick

Hook - Nymph hook (e.g., Mustad 3399 or similar)

Bead - (Optional) Gold or black

Thread -  Black or Olive

Tail - Olive guinea fowl fibers or lemon mallard flank

Rib - Oval gold tinsel or chartreuse wire

Body - Shaggy dubbing (Seal fur or synthetic substitutes) in olive or brown

Thorax - Often uses black "Fritz" or a shaggier dubbing loop for a bulkier profile

Throat/Beard - Olive guinea fowl fibers

Head - Peacock herl (if no bead is used)

The '53 Buick is a high-performance variation of the classic '52 Buick fly pattern, primarily used by stillwater anglers in British Columbia to imitate caddis pupae and "naked" larvae. While the original '52 Buick (created by Gary Carlton) was designed as a general-purpose nymph for damselfly imitations, the '53 variant often incorporates modern, flashier materials to increase its effectiveness.

Because it is an evolution of the '52 Buick, many tiers use the same foundation with slight modifications to the thorax or ribbing for extra "bugginess".
