Massawipi Smelt


Massawipi Smelt

Hook - Mustad 79580, size 2-8 

Thread - White for the body, black for the head

Tail - Fluffy fibers of red feathers (strung hackle, hackle fibers, schlappen or marabou)

Ribbing - Silver tinsel

Body - Burnt orange Uni-Floss

Throat - Downy fibers of red feathers (strung hackle, hackle fibers, schlappen or marabou)

Wing - White deer tail, followed by lavender, followed by black or just mix together

Topping - 5-6 peacock herl feather fibers

Cheeks - Jungle cock

This artificial takes its name from Lake Massawippi in the Eastern Townships region. The creator of this fly was Paul Bean when he lived in Sherbrooke. This bucktail can be found in the book Trolling Flies for Trout & Salmon by Dick Stewart & Bob Leeman.
