Gather your Hackles

I tie a lot of streamer style fly patterns that require hackle feather fibers for tails and throats and may or may not use up the entire feather in 1 tying session.

When not using the feathers I simply gather them and use an electrical test clip to hold them together.

Black Bear Red Butt SBS


Tie in thread and silver oval tinsel behind the hook return.


Wrap back to the barb of the hook.


Wrap the tinsel forward. About 4-6 turns is enough.


Tie in the tag material.


Wrap tag material forward.


Tie in black hackle fibers for the tail and wrap all materials back to the hook return to make a smooth underbody.


Tie in the ribbing tinsel and the body material.


Wrap boody material forwrd followed by the tinsel ribbing. Tie in black hackle fibers for the throat.


Tie on the wing material and wrap a neat head.


Finished fly with tail.


Finished fly without tail.

Changing the tag color will give you a black bear green butt, black bear orange butt etc
