American Woolly

American Woolly

Hook - Mustad #94831 Size: 6 XL
Thread - Black, 6/0
Body - Black Hackle, Brown Hackle, Black Hackle, palmered. Tied as tight and heavy as possible. Trim to resemble a woolly worm caterpillar. Trim it flat or tapered on the ends.

Tying Tips: Easy to tie. Be generous with the head cement.

Fishing Tips: This is a great pattern for late fall. Bump it off a log or stone. Cast it in
near the shore or in any pocket waters. Big trout love it ! Can also be used
for pan fish tied in smaller sizes or for bass in larger sizes. Trim the bottom
of the hackle for a lower profile.

Historical Note: For years I’ve found these Woolly Worms (Pyrrharctia isabella) along the
banks of American rivers. My fascination with caterpillars lead me to develop a
high floating dry fly that closely resembles the ‘Woolly’ and that the fish just
can’t refuse.

Hex Trude

Hex Trude

Hook - Mustad 9671, 9672 or equivalent, size 6
Thread - Tan
Tail - Moose mane or body hairs
Body - Pale yellow or tan poly yarn or dubbing
Wing - White calf tail, tied trude style
Hackle - Grizzly & brown, mixed

Tying Tips: Standard techniques

Fishing Tips: Developed for the Hexagenia hatch. This fly works really well in especially in very light or extremely heavy hatches. The fly floats well and is easily seen. When fishing heavy hatches try casting upstream and to the right or lift of the trout, and then twitch the fly into his window. On many occasions I have been able to coax large trout into striking this pattern long after all feeding has stopped.

Historical Note: Jeff Bonin developed this pattern around 1987. It’s a very simple yet durable pattern. According to Jeff, “it’s my top Hex pattern.” Jeff is the owner of ‘Steelhead Connection Custom Flies,’ located in North Muskegon, Michigan.

Michigan Moth

Michigan Moth

Hook - Mustad #R50-94833, #94840 or R50X-94845 Size: 8-10
Thread - Pale yellow
Body - Natural White Peacock Herl (i substituted white yarn)
Wing: Natural Deer Hair, divided and pulled down to the sides of the fly

Tying Tips: You can use any dry fly hook and if you prefer you can substitute the deer hair light elk hair. Begin tying as if you were doing a caddis fly; once your hair is tied in simply divide the hair and pull it down toward the sides of the fly. Then, using your thread firmly secure the wings.

Fishing Tips: This fly is designed as a generalized moth pattern. Here in Michigan we have many species that we commonly call grass moths, lawn moths or just plane common brown moths. They are usually out April through September. They are attracted to light. When night fishing a river where the banks are lined with cabins the moths will often be found crossing the river, drawn by the lights of the cabins. That’s the most productive scenario for the use of this fly. I suspect that it might also be used on spruce moths.

Historical Note: Developed by Tom Deschaine for use on the Au Sable River, here in Michigan in 2014.

Collared Caddis

Collared Caddis

Hook - Mustad #94833, #94840 or R50X-94845 Size 8-18
Thread - Black
Abdomen - Dubbing (natural or synthetic), black, brown, tan, yellow, gray or green.
Wing - Natural elk hair, tied caddis style, down over the back, slightly beyond the bend
of the hook.
Thorax - Peacock herl.
Head - Trimmed butts of the elk hair wing, caddis style or crown style.

Tying Tips: You may use any dry fly hook. Dubbing can be used in any color to match the insects in
your area. With this pattern I have had the greatest success with Super Fine Dry Fly
Dubbin. After tying in a thorax of thread, trim the head and then go back to overwrap
the thread with peacock herl.

Fishing Tips: This is an all season long caddis pattern. Just match the body color and the hook size to
the insects on the water. Can be fished in most all water situations.

Historical Note: Created by Tom Deschaine in 2014. This is truly a remarkable fly pattern! It was primarily designed to reduce the number of caddis patterns that I usually carry.

Catau's Michigan Hopper

Catau's Michigan Hopper

Hook - Mustad #R74-9672 4XL, size 6-12
Thread - Black or yellow
Tail - Red duck quill, calf tail, yarn or floss, trimmed short.
Body - Medium yarn, yellow, green or brown.
Ribbing - Brown, palmered.
Wing - Deer hair, tied trude over the body.
Head - Trimmed butts from the wing, caddis style.

Tying Tips: Standard techniques. Substitute the body with a poly yarn. There is also a variation of this which has legs.

Fishing Tips: Any time the hoppers are on the water. Body color and hook size by the hoppers in your area.

Historical Note: This fly was developed by Dan Catau back in the 1980s. Dan was an established tyer back in the 70s through the 90s. He tied professionally for Skip’s Sport Shop in Grayling, MI. and later for Hank’s Fly Shop in Lake Orion, MI. He no longer ties but is enjoying his retirement in Washington, MI. He wrote a book on Michigan Hex fishing entitled, “In the thrill of the Night.”

Teacher

Teacher

Hook - Mustad #94840,#94833 or R50X-94845 Sizes 12-24
Thread - Black
Body - Deer body hair, tied around the shank of hook,
extending over the bend in the hook for the tail.
Tail - Extension of the body hair
Rib - Crisscrossed black thread
Hackle - Brown & Grizzly, mixed

Tying Tips: Easy to tie, using the standard techniques.

Fishing Tips: General purpose fly. Use larger sizes early in the summer and the smaller
sizes in the fall when the blue-wing olives are out.

Historical Note: Boyd Senter (1898-1982) was a professional musician having played with
Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Freddie Fisher. He played over 33 different
instruments. He retired to Mio, Michigan where he divided his time between
repairing high school band instruments and running a sporting goods shop,
where he tied and sold his own flies. He established himself as an accomplished
fly tied and fisherman. In 1959 he designed 4 flies honoring different models of
Fords: the Falcon, Fairlane, Galaxie and the Thunderbird

Weed Seed

Weed Seed

Hook - Dry fly style Size: 8-14
Thread - Tan
Tail - Pearl Krystal Flash, 2 strands, tied long
Body - Deer hair, extended beyond the bend of the hook, flared at the rear
Ribbing - Crisscrossed threads
Wing - Deer hair, spread down and across the back

Tying Tips: Simple and quick to tie. Represents a variety of insects so it can virtually
be tied in any size. Also tied in gray and purple.

Fishing Tips: It floats well and is a good searching pattern, especially on new waters.
A very productive pattern.

Historical Note: This fly was created sometime between 2005-2009 by Mike Schultz.
Mike is the owner and head guide of Schultz Outfitters in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Michigan Hillbilly

Michigan Hillbilly

Hook - Mustad 94840 or equivalent
Thread - Black 6/0
Tail - Brown hackle fibers
Egg Sack - Peacock herl
Body - Red chenille*
Wing - Woodchuck
Hackle - Brown

May be tied with a yellow egg sac or yellow body.
*May substitute fur or synthetic for chenille.

Fishing Tips. It was designed to be fished dry (requires a lot of floatant (if using chenille body), but may be fished wet.

Historical Note: Created by the Martuch brothers, Harold, Leon and George who were avid fly fisherman from back in the 1930’s and 1940’s. They often fished the East Branch of the Au Grey river. They used to fish the property of a farmer, whom they respectfully referred to as the ‘hillbilly.’ Leon Martuch is probably the most famous of the three, having founded Scientific Anglers of Midland, Michigan.
