West Carry Dace

West Carry Dace

Dave Prince

Hook - 4xl Streamer, size 6-12
Thread - Black 6/0
Tag - Silver tinsel
Body - Black floss
Rib - Silver tinsel
Belly - Orange bucktail
Throat - Yellow hackle fibers
Wing - Grey bucktail under a few peacock herl
Eye - Painted black over white

Notes: Dave Prince is a Maine guide and developed the West Carry Dace. The pattern came about out of necessity once bait was banned in the waters of West Carry Pond. Dave’s angling companion Louis had observed that the fish in the pond loved the dace, but in fact had a preference for the females who wore yellow and orange shades in their undersides. The color was incorporated into the design with a marabou wing and was instantly successful with the West Carry Pond inhabitants. The pattern can be tied for either trolling or casting and has been proven to catch brook trout, landlocked salmon and Arctic char.

Champs Special Streamer

Champs Special Streamer

Hook - Edgar Sealey & Sons 1762.B, #5

Thread - Black

Tail - Red floss

Body - Silver flat tinsel

Rib - Silver oval tinsel

Belly - A small bunch of white bucktail over 4-5 peacock herls

Underwing - A small bunch of yellow bucktail

Wing - 4 grizzly hackles

Originated by Frank Congdon

The pattern was designed by Mr. Frank Congdon from Middletown, Connecticut and was named
for his wife. The yellow bucktail in the underwing was sometimes substituted with 2 golden pheasant crests, so the bucktail should also be kept sparse. The pattern was given to the Weber Tackle Company.

Hurricane & Barnes Special

Hurricane

Hook - Mustad 3907B #2 (or any 9xl streamer hook)

Thread - Black

Tail - 2 jungle cock body feathers

Body - Silver flat tinsel

Rib - Silver oval tinsel

Throat - 8-10 peacock sword fibers

Wing - A small bunch of red bucktail under a small bunch of white bucktail under 2 grizzly hackles

Originated by Fred Fowler

The Hurricane was designed by an Oquossoc, Maine angler named Fred Fowler. The pattern is also known as the Wonder and was used as the basis for the more celebrated Barnes Special which was developed by Dr. C. Lowell Barnes. There is enough difference in the patterns that many anglers prefer one over the other when trolling for salmon in the Rangeley Lakes

Streamers 365 Vol 3 - Darren MacEachern

Barnes Special

Hook - Gaelic Supreme Mike Martinek Rangeley Streamer hook 8x, size 2 or equivalent

Thread - Red

Tail - 2 short jungle cock body feathers

Body - Silver flat tinsel

Rib - Silver oval tinsel

Underwing - A small bunch of red bucktail over which is a very small bunch of white bucktail

Wing - 2 yellow hackles flanked by grizzly hackle

Collar - Several turns of white hackle (tied on after wing)

Originated by Dr. C. Lowell Barnes

The Barnes Special is an adaptation from a streamer called the Hurricane (aka the Wonder) created by Fred Fowler. The Barnes Special includes a yellow hackle in the wing, a change from a peacock sword throat to a wrapped white hackle and a change of head color from the Hurricane, from black to red. Mr. Barnes was a guide in the Sebago Lake area and was known to examine the stomach contents of his catches. The Barnes Special is one of the most popular Eastern streamers and is credited with the capture of thousands of salmon. It is said to be particularly effective when trolled in the spring.

Stewart's Hawk

Stewart's Hawk

Originated by Austin Hogan

Hook - Streamer 4xl

Thread - Black

Tail - White bucktail

Body - Silver embossed tinsel

Wing - Small bunch of blue bucktail, reaching to the end of the tail. Over this, rather wide slips of any soft, streaked/mottle feather to imitate hawk (used on original)

Cheeks - Jungle cock

Stuart's Hawk is an Austin Hogan pattern. He created it for his friend and fellow angler Clarance "Cak" Stewart. It is responsible for taking a number of small mouth bass in the Northeastern United States and no doubt many trout have been fooled into grabbing hold. The wing was selected for its softness and for the motion imparted as it is stripped through the water, pulsing with a strip and pause. The original pattern called for hawk, but in all cases, it is now illegal to possess raptor feathers. Turkey tail, peacock wing or any mottled feather would work in place of the hawk.
