Hook - Down-eyed 8-10 long shank

Thread - Brown

Body - Peacock herl

Rib - Copper wire

Wing - Mottled brown hen or Turkey

Hackle - A long soft, brown hackle

Head - Brown. The head of the fly is tied in an elongated fashion.

This fly was created by Brian Clarke and given in his excellent book, The Pursuit of Stillwater Trout. It imitates a number of large aquatic nymphs, including the Alder larva. I have heard this fly described as the nymph fisherman’s lure, especially when tied as a hair wing.

Hook - Down-eyed 6-12 long shank

Thread - Black

Tail - Yellow hackle fibres

Body - Flat gold tinsel

Rib - Fine gold wire

Hackle - Yellow hackle

Wing - Yellow goat hair or dyed squirrel, with black hair over

This lure, credited to Bob Church, was devised in the late 1970s for reservoir fishing. It is normally fished deep, but I have taken fish with it at all depths. It is a good lure for cloudy, muddy water.

Hook - Down-eyed 6-10 long shank

Thread - Black

Tail - Soft black cock- or hen-hackle fibres

Body - Flat silver tinsel

Rib (optional) - Fine silver wire

Wing - Two hot-orange hackles back-to-back with two Green Highlander hackles on the outside

Cheek - Jungle Fowl

Hackle - Collar badger hackle (white or cream with a black centre)

This pattern was created in the late 1960s by Alec Iles for fishing Chew Valley. It is especially for those times when the trout feed on fry. He adapted some North American patterns to produce this streamer. The pattern first appeared in John Veniard’s book Lake and Reservoir Flies, 1970.

Brookie Fin

Ribbing - Oval silver tinsel; Shaw’s dressing calls for silver wire

Body - Flat silver tinsel

Hackle - White hackle fibers; Shaw’s original dressing calls for polar bear

Wing - Narrow strips of white, black, and red; married to and topping remainder of orange goose quill sections

Don Bastian Note

Shaw’s formula in the recipe plate for the Brookie Fin calls for making the wing 2/3 orange, and 1/9 each Red, Black, and White. That is accurate, but personally I don’t feel like doing more math than I absolutely have to, especially math with fractions, and when I’m tying flies to boot. I generally use two strips each of white, black, and red, and make the rest of the wing, about 2/3, orange. That’s good for #4, #6, and #8 hooks. On a #2 hook, I’d go with three barbs or flues, and on #10 and #12 hooks, one must use only a single barb each of the topping colors. This type of detailed married-wing wet fly tying is what separates the men from the boys, or the women from the girls. It requires good keen eyesight, and steady hands.

No mention of the origin of the Brookie Fin appears in Shaw’s book, but it is quite likely that she originated it. She concluded her writing on the Brookie Fin with these words: “This is an exceptionally good wet-fly pattern, producing strikes when other patterns may prove to be ineffectual under many fishing conditions.”

Fletcher

Tip - Silver tinsel

Tail - Scarlet, yellow, and guinea fowl married

Hackle - Grizzly tied palmer *

Body - Black floss

Wing - Light brown mottled turkey

Don Bastion Note

* The hackle recipe in Trout calls for gray but the painting is clearly grizzly.

I really like the Fletcher; it is an unremarkable fly except for the three-part married tail, which makes this pattern extremely attractive and fun to tie.

The Fletcher is a good pattern for tiers in the early stages of learning to tie married tails to practice and work on. My reasoning is that once the tail is done, the rest of the fly is relatively easy.
